Hot Consumer Companies To Watch For 2014

NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE  ) announced Friday that it's teaming up with Spectra Energy (NYSE: SE  ) to improve Florida's natural gas infrastructure. NextEra subsidiary Florida Power & Light had previously put out a request for proposals to improve its offerings, and this project beat out the next closest idea by almost $600 million.

The joint venture will pour around $3 billion into the construction of Florida's third major pipeline, connecting Alabama to Georgia and Florida consumers. NextEra will also invest an additional $550 million by itself to connect one of its natural gas power plants to the central pipeline hub.

Florida Power & Light President Eric Silagy noted in a statement:

At FPL, we have worked hard to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and to keep our customers' bills low. Since 2001, our investments in cleaner, more efficient, natural gas power plants have saved our customers more than $6 billion on fuel costs. To continue meeting the growing needs of our customers efficiently and reliably in the years ahead, we will need more natural gas than the two existing major pipelines can deliver, which makes a third, independently routed pipeline system absolutely essential.

United Breweries Co Inc (CCU) Reached $20.91

The prices of United Breweries Co Inc (CCU) shares have declined to $20.91, which is 41.9% off the 3-year high of $34.91.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] s largest brewer (with about 80% of the market share) and No. 2 in the Argentine market, behind Quilmes, which owns 75% of that market. With investment gurus Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio) and Manning & Napier Advisors buying the company shares this past quarter, I believe this company business model is worth a deeper look.

    Running the Market

As the only brewer in Chile with a nationwide distribution network, United Breweries benefits from significant economies of scale, in addition to its brand power. The company product portfolio not only features the Cristal beer brand, but also includes wine, spirits and company-owned non-alcoholic beverages. In addition to this, the firm benefits from licenses to sell PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) and Heineken beverages, while also importing Anheuser Busch Inbev SA (ADR) (BUD) Budweiser beer to Chile and Argentina. This strong market position has allowed the firm to generate excess returns on invested capital above 20%, making it an attractive investment.

Furthermore, United Breweriesbusiness model is focused on market expansion, and in 2013 the company raised 15% of its market capital (CLP 340 billion) in order to fun acquisitions in Paraguay and Argentina. This latter country has been particularly endorsing the firm growth, boosting 2006 16% market share to 23% in 2012. This raise is probably due to the CLP 27 billion that the brewer spent on capital expenditures in Argentina. Looking forward, the company is set on expanding its core businesses by targeting the non-alcoholic Argentine market, the Chilean snack and dairy industry, as well as expanding into nearby markets of Peru, Uruguay, Colombia or Ecuador. And although the risk of an overpayment for acquisitions remains, I believe the company cost advantage in serving the Southern region of Chile will allow for margins to stay intact.

    Valuation and Risks

Nevertheless, United Breweriesmarket dominance in Chile t

After a couple of capital increases and what looks like a weak strategy for its growth in different South American countries, Chile's beer king Compania Cervecerias Unidas (CCU) – most commonly knows as CCU - is selling at a steep discount to its peers. In other words, being down by 23% year to date, I think it might be the time to start thinking of buying CCU's shares.

That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Stoneridge (NYSE: SRI  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

As the U.S. automobile industry recovers, auto parts suppliers are expecting to see increasing sales volumes. Particularly firms such as Delphi Automotive (DLPH) and Stoneridge Inc. (SRI), which specialize in electronic components, expect to make large profits. Increasingly electrified vehicles, higher demand for hybrid and electric powertrain vehicles and stricter governmental emissions regulations should drive revenue growth for these firms in coming years.

Adams Golf (ADGF) was a net-net. It got bought out by Adidas. By the way, it not the only net-net to get bought out this year. Swank (SNKI) was also a net-net that looks like it going to be bought out. Last I heard, they received an alternative proposal during their o shopperiod and haven acted on it. The Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter model portfolio doesn own either stock. Though we do own another net-net where a company in the same industry bought a block of shares. Who knows what that means. But clearly net-nets sometimes attract control buyers.

  • [By Jack Kramer and Nick Martell] Wall Street's busy buying up super high tickets to the NHL Stanley Cup Final games, while Brooklyn hipsters are flocking to random bars to watch the World Cup -- the two big events must partially be behind the market's recent tumble. Fresh after Wednesday's triple-digit loss, the Dow (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) dropped 110 points Thursday.
     1. Unfit forecasts rip lululemon stock We'll spare you the lame "downward dog" yoga references, butlululemon (NASDAQ: LULU  ) dropped 15.9% Thursday after a mixed earnings report. Although revenue topped expectations, rising 11% from last year to $385 million in the first quarter, same-store sales slipped 4%. Even worse, Lulumon cut its full-year revenue forecasts from $1.82 billion to $1.8 billion.

Bad karma has been crushing the Lulu investor's lifestyle. Last year, the "see-through" Lululemon pants caused the company more than $60 million. Then, founder Chip Wilson had to step down last fall after some inappropriate comments -- there are actuallya whole bunch -- about tight black pants and women's bodies. The combo hasn't looked good on the stock.

But Lulu-faithful are confident. New CEO Laurent Potdevin, formerly of TOM'S Shoes and Burton Snowboards, admitted that sales have been slower than expected. And the company's CFO just announced he's stepping down. But the company still plans to buyback $450 million in Lulu stock, which will increase the value of the stock for shareholders.
The takeaway is that Lulu is harnessing positive energy, and now plans a major international expansion. The company plans to stretch out and add 20 stores in Europe and Asia by the end of 2017, with its first in Hong Kong early next year. Plus, it will be opening 14 pop-up stores in North America to lure new shoppers.
