Hot Dividend Stocks To Invest In Right Now

LONDON -- Dividend income accounts for about two-thirds of total returns, or the actual rate of return taking into account both capital and income appreciation. I am currently looking at the dividend prospects of Tesco (LSE: TSCO  ) (NASDAQOTH: TSCDY  ) and assessing whether the company is an appetizing pick for income investors.

While the company still plans to dole out dividends, it is altering 2013 payments that were slated to be paid out next year. For one, the cash payment due in January was cancelled. Also, BBVA said it would increase the dividend payout due in April to help compensate for the January suspension, but in the end, BBVA stock will end up cutting its total payouts from 2013 from 0.42 euros to 0.37 euros.

In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.

Thatshould come as no surprise. Both rely on a large portion of the American consumer population for revenue. For the two companies, there is no such thing as overexposure. Consequently, neither of them needs to market to the relatively small audience reached by the NFL’s online site.

The ultra-deepwater Gulf is an important market for Seadrill, as overall oil production in the Gulf is projected to more than double by 2020. Some of the more recent finds have been in water depths of more than a mile. For example, earlier this year ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) and its partners announced two major finds, both in water depths of more than 5,800 feet, with the wells being drilled to total depths of more than 31,000 feet. Oil producers continue to be forced to drill in deeper water in order to find oil. This trend bodes well for Seadrill which has the ships capable of finding this oil.
