Ford unveiled the Ka Concept in Brazil on Wednesday. The company is expected to begin producing it in 2014. Photo credit: Ford Motor Co.
It looks like a Fusion that shrunk in the wash, doesn't it? It's actually a preview of a new Ford (NYSE: F ) that could turn out to be a big deal in some far-flung markets.
The Ka Concept, as it's called, is Ford's latest "concept" car. It was revealed on Wednesday at an event in Brazil by the highest-ranking Ford official of them all, Executive Chairman Bill Ford.
Sometimes, when an automaker shows a concept car, it's just an idea, something meant to showcase a new technology, or a new design direction for a brand. That's the traditional idea behind the term. But I put the word "concept" in quotes above because often, a Ford "concept" is a thinly veiled (or not-at-all-veiled) preview of something they plan to produce.

In 2008, the world was relatively certain that Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN) - yes, the GPS maker - wasn't going to survive the advent of the smartphone. As this Slate article by Chadwick Matlin explained that year, "Every new iPhone sold means one fewer person needs a GPS unit in his car. Considering that the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 3G iPhone starts at $200 and integrates music, phone, gaming, the Web, and GPS into one unit, the thing is going to siphon serious business away from the old-line GPS manufacturers. Garmin's entry-level portable GPS models hover north of $100. Almost all of the rest retail for more than $200, which isn't looking like a great deal right about now." And, that was the consensus opinion about how disruptive Apple could be to the core business of Garmin.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Divine]
Reaching a 52-week high in trading today, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) failed to get the bearish memo, as it added 2.4%. The market continued to digest yesterday's IDC report that forecast a weakening but not completely horrendous future for personal computers. Though by 2017 PC shipments will be far outnumbered by tablet sales, 333 million are still projected to ship that year, which is no small number.
- [By Dan Carroll]
Finally, Hewlett-Packard is (NYSE: HPQ ) up 0.9% ahead of its quarterly earnings release, due after the closing bell today. Some have expressed optimism about HP's turnaround strategy, particularly as the company looks to diversify away from PC sales into mobile and other more profitable industries. However, personal computers remain a sizable portion of HP's business, and with PC shipments having fallen nearly 14% in the first quarter, don't expect HP's troubles to be over so soon. This stock may be up 70% over the past six months, but until HP's turnaround is complete, expect more challenges to arise.

Hewlett-Packard gets a draft card
Of course, even the modern military can't get by on dinosaur juice alone. In this day and age, silicon is just as important to a fighting army. Helping the Pentagon wage war on its adversaries this week -- and getting handsomely compensated for doing it -- is Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) . - [By John Divine]
But a healthy dividend alone does not an attractive investment make. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) , which pays a 2.5% dividend of its own, lost 2.6% today. Unfortunately, today was just not a great day to be a technology investor, as the sector fell more than any other Wednesday. Not only was HP guilty by association today, but with PC shipments declining more than ever before in the first quarter, investors have legitimate company-specific concerns of their own.
